Klaros

Klaros was a holy place. According to the lays of Homer, it been the center of an important cult as far back as the 7th and 6th centuries B.C.
The oracle and sanctuary of Apollo Clarios were situated in Ionia, near the coast between Smyrna and Ephesos, in the jurisdiction of Izmir. The sanctuary belonged to Colophon with its joint centers, which varied in importance in different periods.

Temple of Apollo



The temple was famed in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, for its oaracle. The temple is Doric, with five steps. It measures 26 meters wide with 6 columns, and 45.30 deep with 11 columns.

Underground Chambers



On the northern side there are two underground vaulted chambers beneath the cella, where the statue of the seated Apollo was situated.
