Kekova

Kekova, where ancient Simena rises up before the port of Kalekoy, is separated from the mainland by a narrow sea straight. Although today it is an island, in reality was once an important Byzantine city on the coast, and a heavily-populated and much older settlement, subsequently destroyed by a disastrous earthquake and almost entirely submersed in sea water in the bradyseismic quakes that followed. Even today, in Tersane, at the center of a sandy bay north of the island, you can admire the well-preserved apse of a Byzantine church dating from the fifth century. The entire coastline and sea-depths surrounding Kekova are literally scattered with ruins, and for centuries this was a region that offered a safe berth for pirates and fishermen. Today it is considered an interesting archaeological area.
