Balbura

48 PICTURES     1.06 minutes HQ video

The archaeological site is about 4 km south of present day's Altinyayla. There are no instruction signs to the village or to the site. The site itself is located on a hill overlooking a small plain. There are houses all around the valley. After you have reached the small bridge, you can proceed by foot along the stream and arrive at the ruins under the acropolis.
Balbura is mentioned as a member of the tetrapolis that was headed by Kibyra. Later the city was a member of the Lycian League for many years.
The city appears in the writings of Hierokles and in the Bishopric lists of the Byzantine era.
The ruins are scattered over two hills and along the stream running under the acropolis. Many sarcophagi are found in the north-western section of the site. The wall surrounding the summit is of late date and made of reused material.

View from the Acropolis

The acropolis lies on a commanding hill, some 1580 meters above sea level.

Necropolis

Sarcophagi are visible along the stream and under the acropolis. The tombs are all of non-Lycian types.

Theater

The theater stands on the hill below the acropolis. It is small, with only 16 rows of benches. There was no stage building, but a platform supported by a wall. The theater overlooks an amazing view of the valley.
