Troy 53 pictures Troy is located 22 km south to Canakkale. The earliest remains are from the Neolithic period. The city is known as the center of ancient civilizations. The legend of Troy began with Greek and Latin literature, Homer first mentioned it in the Iliad and Odyssey. Later it became most popular in Greek drama. Troy was destroyed and rebuilt many times. Until now archaeologists have found 9 levels of Troy labeled from I to IX. Perhaps many other levels are still hidden in it. In the Roman period the temple of Athena was built under the emperor Augustus, whose imperial family honoured Troy as the supposed home of their ancestors. Troy received generous patronage from Rome until the third century A.D. Tower and Gate (Middle and Late Bronze Age) The Ramp This impressive ramp approached the gate. It was made with flat stones and flanked by mudbrick walls. Odeon The Odeon was built in the Roman period. It has a semi-circular orchestra, with a skene. The orchestra is bordered by partition of lime-stone slabs. Sanctuary Troy was an important religious center in Greek and Roman times. The sanctuary was founded as early as the 8^th century B.C. Both parts of the sanctuary were apparently renovated in the late 4^th century B.C. This must have been a consequence of Alexander the Great's visit in 334 B.C Southern gate The southern gate of the fortification-wall, with a tower, stelae, and a street.
