The village today, Kalekoy, was established on the ancient city of Simena. Together with the nearby town Aperloi, it was one of the most powerful members of the league of Lycian cities. The city was established in the 4th century B.C. Simena experienced further sudden growth with the great influx of refugees from nearby Kekova. On the highest point there is a castle. Outside the surrounding areas are scattered with tombs, marking the interesting remains of Lycian sarcophagi.
Conquered in the 9th century A.D. by pirates, after decades of raids, Simena was subsequently abandoned by its inhabitants after a violent earthquake.
