Laodicea is located near Eski-Hisar village. The site is about 10 km from Pamukkale (Hierapolis). Laodicea grew to be an important religious center at the Byzantine era because one of the most important seven churches of Christianity happened to be there, and it was turned into an archbishopric.
The city is on a hill, about 304 meters above sea level. The city first enters history as being founded by Antiochus II Theos, then named for his wife, Laodike. This occurred between 261 and 253 B.C. (There is some uncertainty about the first Seleucid to be interested in this village, however.)
Antiochus III is known to have ruled Asia Minor, when his lieutenant rebelled against him and assumed the crown of Asia Minor in Laodicea in 220 B.C. Shortly thereafter Laodicea was part of the Kingdom of Pergamum.
During the war with Mithradates Laodicea suffered greatly. And Flaccus impounded the twenty-pound gold tribute collected and bound for Jerusalem.

Large Theater

There are two theaters in the site, the large theater is located to the south of the small theater and is from Greek type, the smaller theater is from the Roman type.

Stadium

The most magnificent structure in the city is the stadium. This is one of the largest stadiums in Asia Minor its length is 350 meters long and 60 meters wide. The stadium was dedicated to Emperor Vespesian in 79 A.D.

Gymnasium

This structure was dedicated to Hadrian and Sabina.
