In the 4th century B.C. settlers came from the Aegean and made a first start with nowadays is known as Kizkalesi.
In the 67 A.D. the Roman Emperor Pompeius, rescued the settlement from the ever-attacking pirate. The settlement got the name Korykos and became connected with the Roman Empire.
During this period it grew into a prosperous independent harbor city. During the Roman time an aqueduct was built to provide the city with water and Korykos became the main center of olive oil export.

The trade expended even more during Byzantine times. Between the more influential trade centers like Egypt, Cyprus and Rome Korykos took its place there too.
In 1448 Sultan Ibrahim took over and Korykos came under his rule.
In 1482 Korykos became part of the Ottoman Empire.
The castel on the beach was built in the 12th century A.D., and the other castel on the Island about 300 meters from the shore both have remains of churches and cisterns. They were connected one time by a causeway.
