Tefen Ruins

In the area of Tefen, in the Western Galilee, in Wadi Beit Ha'emeq, there are three large castles: Mahoz, Tefen, and Hazak.

Tefen

There has not yet been any set, organized excavation either in Tefen or in Mahoz. In Tefen ruins, traces of walls may be seen prominently, as well as a gate and a tower whose date is unknown. The earthenware that was gathered are dated from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, and Mamluk times. The ruins of Hazak and Mahoz are near each other. Mahoz is the bigger one, and holds the hidden traces of a town dated from Byzantine times. The archeological excavation held in nearby Heshek ruins revealed a Christian church dated from Byzantine times. The church was isolated, built north of the ruins of Mahoz. Gorgeous mosaics decorate the floors of the church hall. On the floors an inscription mentioning the Martyr Georgius, in whose memory the church was built.
