Ancient Synagogues in Israel
550 pictures
35 minutes HQ video
Synagogues are the most distinctive feature of the Jews of Israel in the Mishnaic and Talmudic eras. After the destruction of the Temple, the synagogue became a sort of "Little Sanctuary", around which the spiritual-religious and also the social and communal life of the Jewish population was centered.
The architecture and art of the synagogues are among the most investigated subjects in archaeology in Israel. Dozens of synagogues have already been excavated and every once in a while new discoveries emerge following surveys and excavations.
IIn the current project hundreds of synagogues were photographed and documented. The photographs and video segments are organized and cataloged conveniently.
Here are few examples of the photographs of synagogues in Israel. For a detailed verbal description of the sites, please check "Archaeological sites in Israel"
