Sycamina

On the Mediterranean coast, at the end of the cape where Haifa port begins to take form, there is a small hill. Years of many archeological excavations have revealed there layers of settlement, dated from different times. That is the Hill of Sycamina. During the Israelite period, the settlers of the place made their living out of oil production, as indicated by the olive presses, the stores, and the storage vessels that were discovered. During Persian times, the Phoenicians were settling in Sycamina, and later, during Hellenistic and Roman times, castles were built in the site. During Byzantine days, the area grew ten times as much as the size of ancient settlements. A monastery and a church were once discovered in the site. They were decorated with gorgeously colored mosaic floors.
