Near the curve in the road climbing from Farod to Meron, on the top of the mountain, Hirbet Shema is located.

The Synagogue

There are those who identify Galilte Teko'a in the ancient settlement traces, praised by our Old Sages for the high quality oil made there. The traces of the synagogue were discovered in the middle of the settlement. The excavators noticed that it first existed during Roman times, and after it was destroyed in an earthquake it was rebuilt during Byzantine times. In the sanctuary, two rows of stone columns were fully preserved, as well as the base of the podium near the wall facing Jerusalem. Also discovered in the building: A stone doorpost with a Menorah (candelabrum) shaped relief, and a side room which was probably used as a storage of the holy books.
