In ancient times a small Jewish village was situated in the heart of what now is Biriya Forest, planted by the Jewish National Fund. The settlement was founded in the Iron Age, and existed all through the First Temple Period (8th-12th centuries B.C.).

The Jewish settlement that flourished here in the Second Temple Period and the Mishnaic and Talmudic periods, was identified as Naburiya, the birthplace of the fourth generation of Amoraim (sages of the Talmud). One of them was Rabbi Yehuda of Naburiya, who taught in Tyre and Caesarea in defiance of the Halacha, and for that he was whipped and reprehended by the elder Rabbis.
