On the gravel slopes which lie between Caesarea and Atlit, a small fortress known as "Metzer Ha'bonim" can be found. This fortress lies in the midst of the modern Jewish settlement of Habonim. In fact, recently modern homes have been built between its walls.
The Fortress

The fortress is square in shape with external buttresses supporting its walls. Each of its corners accommodates a Moslem styled tower. The entranceway, found at the southern wall, is flanked by two semi - circular columns. Not much is known about the history of this fortress, since no mention of it is made in ancient Moslem or Crusade texts and archeological digs are yet to be carried out.
Southern Gate

Some believe that the fortress was built during the early Moslem period, as one of the many look - out depots erected along the coastal line, fortifying the region against Byzantine invasion. In this case, the site could well be a 7th century fortress referred to as "KfarLat".
The earliest known data concerning the fortress dates to the late Crusade period (second half of the 13th century), when the site was transformed into a fortified Byzantine stronghold. The site was used as a stronghold until it fell into Moslem hands.
