Nea Pleuron

68 pictures     2 minutes HQ video

The city is on the lower western slopes of the Arakynthos. It was built on a natural terrace with a view of the sea, and has spectacular pseudo-isodomic and trapezoidal walls, with seven gates (230 B.C.) and at least 30 towers served by stairways. Apart from the extraordinary walls, the portico and gymnasium close to the wide agora are also worthy of note, together with a large communal cistern to the west. The city districts were arranged according to function, the residential district lying to the south and the sacred area to the north of the agora, making Nea Pleuron a good example of Hellenistic town planning.

Theater

This theater is another interesting example of a theatrical building. Its position is especially dramatic, in sight of the marshy plain of the river Acheloos. The small theater features a few structural curiosities such as its placement in a rectangular structure and the fact that the proscenium is built against the inner face of the city walls that date from the same period.

Water Reservoir

This large water-reservoir, cut into the rock, is divided by walls into 5 parts.

City Wall

This defensive wall has 36 towers, and was 3 km long.
