The ruins of Kameiros lie on the west coast of Rhodes.

Kameiros

The surviving remains date from the town-planning project at the end of the third century B.C. No visitor would want to miss the chance to see the sanctuary of Apollo Pythios, known as the Hyerotytheion.

It is enclosed within a colonnaded courtyard featuring other shrines, exedrae and a monumental 4th century B.C fountain. The large north-south road is flanked by residential districts with peristyle houses. The acropolis, with its impressive Doric stoa and projecting side wings, stretches for 200 meters and is decorated with 87 columns on its facade, which served as a curtain behind which opened 46 rooms to accommodate travelers. The stoa also provided access to the Archaic and Classical sanctuary of Athena Kameiras, with its Doric peripheral temple hexastyle dedicated to the goddess, featuring a Classical design.
